Pastor Evan Mawarire is expected in court tomorrow (April 21). Mawarire recently had bail conditions relaxed by the High Court who returned his passport to allow him to visit his family in the United States. He was arrested in February after he returned to Zimbabwe for the first time after 6 months in exile in the United States.
Mawarire is facing charges of subverting a constitutionally-elected government and inciting people to commit public violence. According to the State, Mawarire allegedly mobilised the public through social media platforms to stage anti-government protests between July and December last year. It is the State’s that people listened of Mawarire’s calls for protests and engaged in violent demonstrations, which destroyed a lot of property particularly in Harare. The State argues that on September 15 last year Mawarire also mobilised Zimbabweans in the US and all over the world to converge in New York to protest against President Robert Mugabe’s presence at the United Nations General Assembly.
