Harare City withdraws stand offer to Mayor after Kasukuwere intervenes citing abuse of office

Harare City Council has withdrawn its decision to sell a Newlands stand to Mayor Bernard Manyenyeni. This comes after Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister Saviour Kasukuwere intervened saying the decision bordered on abuse of office. Manyenyeni was supposed to buy the stand for $106 000.

The city of Harare resolved that:

That council notes the ministerial directive dated November 29, 2016 on its resolution regarding the sale of Stand 19554 Harare Township, to His Worship, the Mayor for a sum of $106 000.

“That, in view of resolution above and in terms of Section 314(1) of the Urban Councils Act, the resolution recorded under item 10 of the 1858th ordinary Council Minutes regarding the proposed sale of Stand 19554 Harare Township to His Worship, the Mayor be and is thereby rescinded

The government recently withdrew all privileges for councilors to purchase commercial or industrial stands and said such stands should be allocated on the basis of the waiting list or by public tender.
