"Matabeleland South may become a desert due to Amacimbi (caterpillar) harvesters"

Villagers in Gwanda have called on the government to intervene and save their environment from mopane caterpillars harvesters. The harvesters are cutting down trees in an effort to maximise their harvests of the caterpillars.

A villager who spoke to NewsDay said:

We have a problem with people who are coming from other areas outside Gwanda because they are cutting down trees in a bid to harvest caterpillars. This is bad because our area can be turned into a desert within a short space of time.

Green Action Trust, recently warned that Matabeleland South risked becoming a desert if the issue remained unresolved.
