$100 fine for kicking six-month pregnant woman and causing miscarriage

Western Commonage Magistrate Mr Lungile Ncube sentenced Hillary Mbekwe (38) to 90 days in jail wholly suspended for assaulting a woman resulting in a miscarriage. Mbekwe was given the option of paying $100 to avoid the 90-day jail sentence for kicking Ms. Juliet Maphosa (27) in the stomach when she was 6-months pregnant. She suffered a miscarriage as a result.

Mbekwe denied that he had kicked the victim saying he had only slapped her after she had insulted him. In Passing sentence Magistrate Ncube said:

It is not wise to take the law into your own hands. When you have an altercation with someone you need to engage the police or a third party to help you solve your problems

You may deny having kicked her but how can a mere slap result in a miscarriage? The only reason why you have been spared a custodial sentence is because you are a first offender hence sending you to jail may turn you into a worse criminal.
