Man jailed 5 years in UK for biting 3 year-old child, claims it is acceptable in Zimbabwe

Kuzivakwashe Chigariro, 22, a Zimbabwean national of Wolverhampton, West Midlands was jailed for biting his three-year-old son as a means of disciplining him. The child suffered 28 separate injuries including bites to his back and chest. The son had to be treated by plastic surgeries because of the extensive injuries which were inflicted on him. His father was reportedly, drunk and high on cannabis when he assaulted the child.

Chigariro pled guilty to charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. In his defence Chigariro argued that that biting was an acceptable form of discipline during his upbringing in Zimbabwe. He was sentenced to five years and four months in prison. In passing sentence, Judge Amjad Nawaz said:

Somebody who causes that number of injuries to a young child may have derived some sort of pleasure from doing it.

What that could be, I cannot imagine

The mother was convicted in absentia for child cruelty and a warrant has been issued for her arrest.
