Linda Masarira’s appeal blocked after failure to raise $150 as security fee, approaches High Court

A clerk of court at the Harare magistrate’s court has refused to accept a notice of appeal from activist Linda Masarira. The appeal was blocked after she failed to pay $150 in “security fees.” However, her lawyer Obey Shava of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights has approached the High Court challenging the constitutionality of this conduct. Speaking to New Zimbabwe,

Shava said:

The clerk of court has refused to accept her notice of appeal because she failed to raise $150 for security costs.

We have, however, approached the High Court challenging this conduct as being unconstitutional. The challenge is still pending,

The human rights defender is challenging her conviction and sentence for public violence stemming from the July 6 national strike, dubbed #ShutdownZimbabwe. She is currently performing community service at Malborough Clini after she was sentenced to 385 hours of community service.
