MPs want a salary increment, say they are the lowest paid in Africa

Yesterday Members of Parliament said they wanted a salary increment claiming that they are the lowest paid legislators in Africa. The MPs want the salaries to range from $4000 to $10 000 per month. This will be a massive hike as the MPs are currently earning a gross salary of $1 124 per month and $1024 representation allowance. The salary issues hs been left to the Standing Rules and Orders Committee to decide on the amount instead of the Minister of Finance.

MDC-T Vice President Nelson Chamisa said:

We have replaced the issue of an independent commission deciding salaries for MPs and put the powers in a quasi-independent body, the Standing Rules and Orders Committee, as opposed to the Finance minister determining the lump sum of MPs and putting it in line with the rest of the civil service.

Speaker of the National Assembly Jacob Mudenda also revealed that MPs would get stands and laptops.

Earlier on this year it was revealed that President Mugabe, VP Emmerson Mnangagwa and VP Phelekezela Mphoko had been given salary increments.
