Twine Phiri sentenced to 10 months in prison over $24 000 maintenance arrears, given until 30 May

Former Caps United owner Twine Phiri was sentenced to 10 months in prison by Harare Magistrate Lazini Ncube. However, he was given until the 30th of May to settle $24 000 in maintenance arrears or he goes to prison. Phiri has four more pending dockets at the courts. He was taken to the courts by his ex-wife Keresiya for failing to pay maintenance arrears. Last year in March, Phiri was ordered to pay $2 913 per month for the upkeep of his children but only managed to pay $3 600 between April and November.

Phiri pleaded with the court not to give him a custodial sentence saying he was owed a lot of money by Caps United. The state on the other hand argued thathe was wilful defaulter. Prosecutor Progress Maringamoyo said:

He is not a first offender and it has grown to be part of his genes.
