Veteran radio personality, Tichafa Matambanadzo popularly know as Tich Mataz, who is accused of trying to smuggle clothes and shoes from China into the country told the court yesterday that he thought his items were on rebate. Harare Magistrate Mr Lazini Ncube will pass judgement on the issue today.
In his defense Mataz said he did not know the name of the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) official who dismissed him. He said he had no intention of evading duty but only left after he was dismissed. However, during cross examination by prosecutor Ms Francesca Mukumbiri, Mataz confirmed that he was a regular traveller and said that he thought he had no goods to declare and said that it depends with the interaction with Zimra officials.
He said that he declared 5 suits when he had ten because the Zimra official counted those that he had went to China with. In her closing remarks the prosecutor said Mataz had failed to name the Zimra official who had dismissed him because he was lying. She also called on the courts to punish the radio personality accordingly.
