Hwange Colliery Company starts retrenching

A senior official who spoke to The Chronicle on condition of anonymity revealed that Hwange Colliery Company Limited (HCCL) has began a retrenchment exercise to lay off about 1 000 workers.

The official told The Chronicle that the exercise was expected to end by early April. HCCL has began a voluntary retrenchment process but Sunday News reported that the company was now targeting workers above 50 years for compulsory retrenchment. The company which was once Zimbabwe’s biggest coal producer has a debt of about $300 million.
