Driver who almost ran over David Coltart apologises, Coltart withdraws criminal charges

`Last week former Minister David Coltart was almost run over by an irate driver after Coltart had confronted him for reckless driving. Coltart later filed criminal charges against the driver.

However, today Coltart announced that he was withdrawing the charges after the driver, John Sinchuke reached out to him and apologised for his conduct. He also wrote a letter to the former Senator expressing his regret.

In a Facebook post Coltart said:

During our meeting I explained to Mr Sinchuke that my concern did not relate solely to the potential harm against myself. I explained that I was also concerned about the other motorists who had patiently been waiting in the long queue of cars, all of whom were also either rushing to work or wanting to get their children to school on time. But my greatest concern was for the school children who cross Cecil Avenue haphazardly, especially when there is stationary traffic. A number of children have been knocked over near Hillside Primary School when they have emerged from between stationary cars and been hit by vehicles going in the opposite direction. That could easily have happened on Friday with fatal consequences.

As will be seen from Mr Sinchuke’s letter he appreciates that his conduct was selfish and dangerous. I think he has learnt from this incident. My hope is that we will all try to be more patient and respectful on our roads.
