Chief Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku expressed disappointment, that he was leaving a divided court upon hios retirement. The retired Chief Justice said these remarks at his farewell dinner which was snubbed by all senior government official except for Minister of Finance and Economic Development Patrick Chinamasa.
Members of the judiciary and the executive are divided on the issue of Chidyausiku’s successor as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Chidyausiku himself echoed these sentiments saying:
There are times when things do not go the way they should… one of them is the way we are quarrelling about my successor… it is really a big disappointment,
I would have wanted to leave one very united judiciary that is fearless, independent and with a backbone of steel.
Vice President and Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Emmerson Mnangagwa did not attend the function. High Court Judge President, Justice George Chiweshe also chose not to make an appearance.
This means that until the President appoints a new Chief Justice, Deputy Chief Justice Luke Malaba will assume the position in an acting capacity.
