Fired Gweru mayor owes council more than $400 000 in unpaid water and rates

Hamutendi Kombayi, who was recently fired as Gweru mayor is reported to owe the local authority more than $400 000 in outstanding water and rates bills. The allegation is contained in a report compiled by an independent tribunal which investigated Kombai and Gweru councillors for misconduct and gross abuse of council funds.

Minister of Local Government, Public Works &National Housing Saviour Kasukuwere fired Kombayi last week and one other councillor, and reeinstated 10 councillors.

Part of the independent tribunal’s report reads:

It is alleged that the mayor (Kombayi) abused his office by victimising council employees not to pursue recovery of money owed to council by accused and his companies which amount to USD425, 023
