Floods Update: Masvingo receives record breaking rains, Lundi Mission School pupils rescued

Masvingo received 223mm of rainfall over the weekend, breaking a 100 year record in Zimbabwe. The record breaking rainfall has left most districts in the southern parts of the country battling with floods.

Speaking at a media briefing in Harare today, the Minister of Environment, Water and Climate, Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri revealed that Rupike in Masvingo received 223mm of rainfall within 24 hours, followed by Bikita which received 169mm and Zaka with 149mm.

In another media briefing, the Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Saviour Kasukuwere said the country is faced with serious flooding challenges especially in the southern parts of the country. Kasukuwere said search  and rescue missions have been dispatched to rescue communities in the confluence of Tugwi and Mushandike rivers where 12 people were successfully airlifted today and another 11 rescued near Kwekwe, adding that at Lundi Mission School, children have been moved to higher ground awaiting airlifting.
