The country’s top three officials will be getting salary raises after Treasury budgeted for an increase in salaries for President Mugabe, and his two deputies Phelekezela Mphoko and Emmerson Mnangagwa.
According to the revised edition of the 2017 National Budget estimates of expenditure the top three will gross $672 000 between them. This represents a 7.7 percent increase from the previous year when they grossed $624 000.
Officials from the Ministry of Finance and Economic have been rather evasive on the matter and did not respond to calls, text messages or emails when the Finacial Gazette reached out to them.
The salary increment was condemned by Former Finance Minister Tendai Biti who claimed that Mugabe earned more than the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom despite the fact that Zimbabwe’s economy was a tiny faction of the British Economy. Said Biti,
How can the President of Zimbabwe earn more than the Prime Minister of Britain? It’s ridiculous. The British Prime Minister presides over an economy worth US$3 trillion; our Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is a paltry US$10 billion. This economy cannot sustain those obscene salaries. I used to pay him US$4 000
