Bhasikiti to contest Mwenezi East by-election on ZimPF ticket despite being expelled

Former Masvingo Provincial affairs Minister Kudakwashe Bhasikiti will be contesting in the Mwenezi East by-election as a Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF) candidate. This is despite the fact that Bhasikiti and 6 others were expelled from ZimPF by party president Joice Mujuru.

The Mwenezi East by-election will be held on the 8th of April 2017. The by-election is meant to fill the seat that was vacated by the death of Joshua Moyo in December last year.

Including Bhasikiti, 4 candidates will be running for the seat. The other three are:

  • Joosbi Omar who will be representing Zanu-PF
  • Welcome Masuku who will be representing the National Constitutional Assembly and
  • Turner Mhango who will be representing the Free Zimbabwe Congress Party

Bhasikiti said that he is one of the founding members of ZimPF and as such cannot be expelled by Mujuru. He revealed that the elders of ZimpF have advised Mujuru to stop using the party’s name and logo. Said Bhasikiti:

We have since written to (ZimPF leader Dr) Mujuru advising her to stop using the ZimPF name and if she defies, we will seek an interdict at the courts. As I speak right now, plans are afoot to have a ZimPF interim president and we will have one by the end of next week.
