Former Finance Minister Tendai Biti‘s opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has joined the Coalition for Democrats (CODE), a group which is pushing for the grand coalition of Zimbabwean opposition parties to participate in the 2018 Elections. CODE wants to present a united front in order to push out Zanu PF and deal with the problems Zimbabwe is facing.
The outspoken Biti blamed Mugabe for Zimbabwe’s problems and promised to work tirelessly to solve the suffering of the people of Zimbabwe. Biti also stressed that as CODE was not worried if other parties did not join their coalition, and was prepared to go at it alone. This might be taken as a dig at MDC-T, which has previously said that it will only work parties which will add value to any coalition.
In joining this coalition we are aware that people are suffering, the only employment is selling tomatoes we are living worse than cattle and animals in the bush because of Mugabe
We commit to work tirelessly for Code, we have not come to impose any agenda. CODE is not competing with any political party, we won’t beg anyone to join. We are signing CODE in church because it is God who has an agenda with Mugabe...
Other members of CODE are:
- Mavambo Kusile Dawn led by Simba Makoni
- Professor Welshman Ncube’s Movement for Democratic Change formation
- Renewal Democrats of Zimbabwe led by Elton Mangoma
- Democratic Assembly for Restoration Empowerment (Dare) and
- Zimbabweans United for Democracts (Zunde)
