Teachers to go on strike on Monday over unpaid 2016 bonuses

The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (Artuz) have given notice that they will be going embarking on a strike starting on Monday the 20th of February, 2017.  The teachers are striking over their unpaid 2016 bonuses.  This follows a similar announcement by the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA) who said that doctors will be going on a nationwide strike starting tomorrow after the government introduced a hiring freeze for all new doctors.

The teachers union argued that their actions were covered under Section 65 of the Constitution which gives employees a right to job action.

In a statement, the  Artuz said:

We have since notified our employer of our intention to express our disgust with the irresponsible behaviour of the employer

In line with Section 65 of the new Constitution, we have a right to engage in job action. That right cannot be withdrawn by an act or any statutory instrument, thus our strike is justifiable and legitimate.

We urge all teachers to brace up for the 20th of February strike. The job action will send a clear message to the heartless employer who is also government that teachers’ issues and the welfare of all the poor must be prioritised or this country can become ungovernable

The government admitted that it is broke, and does not have the money to pay the bonuses.  Instead, the government gave the civil servants three options for the bonus payment.  The discussions are still ongoing.
