Moyo says professionals without Maths are unskilled, undergrad degree will become minimum prof. qualification

Higher and Tertiary Education minister Jonathan Moyo has said that all people who do not have Ordinary Level mathematics are uneducated. Moyo  also described professionals without ordinary level mathematics as unskilled.

Moyo was appearing before the parliamentary committee on Higher and Tertiary Education yesterday. Said Moyo

A person who doesn’t speak through numbers as far as I am concerned is unskilled. We are not shy to say if you graduated from ‘O’ Level without Mathematics you are not educated.

Moyo also praised the STEM Initiative (science Technology Engineering Mathematics) which provides free education for Advanced Level students doing science, saying, that  its the only way the country was going to develop.  However, the minister questioned the ability of “unstemitised” academics saying

We know that before STEM there have been engineers, civil and actuarial engineers. But we take issue to their ability to provide solutions to obvious problems in society

It is not good enough to tell me there are civil engineers whilst there are potholes all over the place and nobody has come up with a local solution to a local problem.

STEM emphasizes on technological and engineering solutions. That has been missing. We need pothole and road engineers.

Moyo also added that he was working on a new curriculum which will make an undergraduate degree the minimum professional qualification.
