The state applied for another postponement for Pastor Evan Mawarire‘s bail hearing today. The prosecutors representing the State said that they needed more time to prepare their responses to the defence’s application saying that they had suffered a power cut. They claimed that they had been unable to work because of the lack of electricity. The state’s response was supposed to have been filed by close of business yesterday.
High Court Judge, Justice Clemence Phiri is not impressed by the actions of the state. He tells the prosecutors that electricity is available today, so they should assemble their team and prepare their response. The judge stresses that the state’s response should be filed by noon regardless of the circumstances. Justice Phiri adds that the State should not to waste the court’s time by being unprepared because the court is busy and bail applications are urgent
Justice Phiri has ruled that the application will be heard after lunch at 2:30 pm. The bail hearing had been set for this morning. Mawarire was arrested last week on Wednesday after returning to Zimbabwe following 6 months in the United States. He was denied bail by Harare Magistrate Elisha Singano, who advised him to apply for bail at the High Court.
