The Constitutional Court is set to rule on whether President Robert Mugabe has the necessary fitness to hold office given his advanced age and d violation of the Constitution, as alleged by Promise Mkwananzi. This comes after Promise Mkwananzi one of the leaders of the #Tajamuka/Sesjikile Movement filed an application challenging the nonagenarian’s fitness to lead the country. Mkwananzi argued that Mugabe was guilty of gross human rights violations contrary to the constitution.
Mkwananzi also argued that Mugabe posed a danger to national security due to the fact that he was too old and frail to perform his duties satisfactorily.
An excerpt of Mkwananzi’s application reads:
He is old and frail and no longer has the agility and concentration to superintend over critical affairs of the state. His incapacity (to lead) poses a real danger to the stability and security of the country. He must accept his fate and go to rest
In response to Promise Mkwananzi, the registrar of the Constitutional court wrote:
Please take notice that the above constitutional application will be heard and determined by the Constitutional Court in Harare on Wednesday the 8th day of February 2017 at 09:30 or soon thereafter as counsel may be heard
