Harare City Council explains why it bought luxury vehicles when it owes workers 6 months' salary worth over 20 million

Speaking to The Herald, Harare City Council spokesperson, Mr Michael Chideme said that residents alone now owed the local governing authority in excess of $249 while they owe workers six months’ salary worth over $20 million.

He also explained that they had acquired 25 Hyndai 110i vehicles for revenue collection and that the vehicles were bought on a three year credit facility. Said Chideme:

The vehicles were bought through a public tender. Each of the vehicles cost $24 116. The lowest bid was awarded, Previous council hired vehicles for revenue collection but that proved to be unsustainable and expensive.

He said that the vehicles will be deployed to various districts in line with Council’s decentralisation programme. He said that Council will this week award a tender for the purchase of another 17 service delivery one tonne trucks.
