City of Harare's priorities questioned after it buys 25 luxury cars for "debt collection"

The City of Harare has purchased a fleet of 25 luxury cars, which they claim will be used for debt collection. While the city is yet to reveal the amount spent on the fleet, it has been reported that a single vehicle costs $24 000. The cars arrived on Monday.

Council workers and residents have condemned the move, with Residents Forum (Ref) questioning the City of Harare’s priorities.   They said service delivery remains poor, with the City of Harare failing to collect refuse among other failures, yet they are prioritising the buying of luxury cars.

Ref coordinator Denford Ngadziore said

It surely boggles the mind when council prioritises luxury at the expense of human dignity and livelihoods.

Last time, council failed to justify the vehicles they bought using the $144 million China Eximbank loan

Residents also questioned why the City is buying cars for debt collection yet it has already engaged the services of WellCash Debt Collectrs to go after defaulting residents.

A council worker who spoke to the Daily News also criticised the move, due to the fact that workers have gone for more than half a year without being paid.  He said:

Right now we are six months behind in salaries yet they have the audacity to buy brand new cars
