200 000 Zimbabweans may become illegals in SA

As many as 200 000 Zimbabweans living in South Africa under the Zimbabwe Special Dispensation Permit (ZSP) may become illegals at the end of this year due to the fact that ZSP is expiring at the end of they year. It can’t be renewed.

South African Home Affair Minister Malusi Gigaba announced that ZSP could not continue indefinitely. He advised that Zimbabweans may need to apply for the right permits to regularise their stay in the country. The other option would be for the Zimbabweans to apply for Visas just like all other foreigners.

Gigaba said South Africa could not afford to take in such a large number of people as this would set the wrong precedence.

Said Gigaba:

We can’t offer permanent residency for such a high number of people
