Headmaster and SDC members steal $92 000 from school

Philemon Alufayi (65) who is a former headmaster at Nhamburiko Primary School appeared in court on Tuesday on allegations of stealing $92 000 in connivance with School Development Committee chairperson Saul Tore and the deputy Majory Zingoni. He appeared before Harare Magistrate Rumbidzayi Mugwagwa and was remanded to March 15 on $200 bail.

Alufayi who was headmaster from January 2009 to October 2016 was a signatory of the School Development Fund’s CBZ account. Whenever the school wanted to procure something, a procurement committee would find three quotations from registered companies before agreeing on a winning bid. They would then forward the bid to Alufayi for authorisation before two signatories withdrew money from the bank account and give it to the accountant assistant.

However the trio allegedly made withdrawals from the bank account and breached procurement procedure. On May 2016 the school authorised a $2 300 withdrawal but Tore made a double withdrawal and converted the money for his personal use. The headmaster transferred $1 050 into Tore’s account before converting it for personal use. The fraud came to light when a team of internal auditors launched an investigation resulting in some companies disowning receipts usedby Alufayi and his accomplices.
