12 people rescued by helicopter as Mbembesi River floods shutting down highway to South Africa

One person is feared dead, while 12 people were rescued by helicopter following floods in West Nicholson that resulted in a section of the Bulawayo-Beitbridge highway impassable for nearly 12 hours yesterday.

The floods occurred after Mbembesi River burst its banks at around 5 am cutting off traffic on the highway to Beitbridge and South Africa with vehicles being able to cross the bridge at 4PM. Speaking to The Chronicle, Matebeleland South police spokesperson, Inspector Philisani Ndebele confirmed the incident.
