Govt freezes recruitment of teachers due to lack of funding

Government will not be recruiting new teachers because of lack of funds. Last year the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education had said the education sector was exempted from the Government freeze on civil servants and more than 7 000 teachers were to be recruited at the beginning of the year.

However, in an interview with Sunday News on Friday, Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Prisca Mupfumira, said Government did not have the money to cater for new teachers hence could not go ahead with the recruitment. She said the intention to recruit teachers was still there but Treasury has not given them the go ahead but she could not give an exact date when the Treasury will get the resources to cater for the new teachers. Said Mupfumira:

Intentions are still there but at the moment Treasury is yet to get the money required to pay those teachers. We are still waiting for Treasury’s concurrence. It is only when we get the money that we will start recruiting. At the moment there is no money.
