Armed robber to hang for “premeditated murder” committed in 2008

Doubt Mathe of Gokwe was sentenced to death for the murder of a security guard in 2008.  Mathe and two accomplices bludgeoned  Taurai Mache to death using a hoe handle before stealing cash, a generator and two solar inverters.  The sentence was passed by High Court judge Justice Nicholas Mathonsi who was sitting on circuit in Gweru.

Justice Mathonsi said that the murder was premeditated and convicted Mathe of murder with actual intent. He also said that as the murder was committed in the course of a robbery the death sentence was appropriate. In his judgement Justice Mathonsi said:

The courts do not condone murder. We should respect the sanctity of human life. There is a need for stiffer penalties for murders committed with intent.
