Government declares Harare's “untrafficable’’ roads a state of disaster

Harare’s roads have been declared a state disaster and are said to be contributing to major accidents.   The government will assist the city to rehabilitate the roads.  The roads have also been worsened by the constant rains.  Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister Saviour Kasukuwere said the city of Harare could not cope and the government was going to engage contractors in fixing the roads.

Said Kasukuwere:

We will certainly write to the Office of President and Cabinet and waiver some of the requirements because we have a state of disaster

We have not had sufficient funding in the City of Harare to look after the road infrastructure. We actually have a state of disaster. We have to mobilise as much resources as possible and I am happy the Minister of Transport has come to give us that support for us to be able to repair and also maintain most of our roads

…The City of Harare cannot cope. Clearly what you can see is that they have failed on their own to look after this situation hence we had to ask the parent Ministry of Transport to assist us in maintaining the roads
