Mzembi's bid for UNWTO secretary general may be derailed after Morocco and Mauritius forwarded their own candidates

Minister of Tourism Walter Mzembi‘s bid for secretary-general of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) is facing challenges from Morocco and Mauritius.  The two African countries have submitted their own candidates for the post despite the fact that the African Union had endorsed Walter Mzembi.

Not surprisingly, Mzembi was not too thrilled about this new development but he acknowledged that the two countries were within their rights to breaks ranks with the African Union.  Speaking at an International Tourism Fair in Spain, Mzembi said:

It is their sovereign right to break ranks with a formal decision of African heads of state and government.

For my part, I stand by the confidence the AU has placed in me and recalling the powerful legacy of African international civil servants such as Kofi Annan and Dr Boutros Boutros Ghali—albeit leaders of the UN mother body itself.

The unilateralism we are witnessing is the same unilateralism responsible for much of the mischief and conflict in our world today.
