ZRP take full page to deny collecting $59 m in spot fines, accuse reporter of twisting facts

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has denied that it collected $59 million dollars in spot fines.  The police even took a whole page to explain their position.  They accused the reporter of being biased and of twisting facts to “as a way of misleading the public and obviously casting the ZRP in bad light. ” ZRP said it did not raise $59 million, although they did not give the actual figure.  They said that the $59 million was the projected amount that they expected to raise in 2017.

While appearing before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committe on Home Affairs on 17th January 2017 the Permanent Secretary of Home Affairs. Cde Matshiya clearly revealed that the figure of S59 million was actually a projection/ estimate which the ZRP anticipated to realise in 2017 There is no way Veneranda Lange could have missed to capture such a straightforward statement by the permanent Secretary.

In the statement, the police urged the media to be professional and responsible.   The statement seeks to make it clear that the police are not “revenue collectors. ” Part of the statement reads:

The media should take note that police officers are not just revenue collectors Instead they look at the commisson of offences and the remedies which are clearly stipulated in terms of the country laws
