ZIMRA introduces lie detectors to stop corruption by ZIMRA employees at borders

The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority is introducing Lie detectors to help fight corruption amoung its employees. The lie detectors will be used mostly at borders. The lie detectors will be used first for employees at Beitbridge Border Post.

ZIMRA employees are unhappy about the lie detectors. Employees are represented by Zimbabwe Revenue Authority Trade Union (Zimratu). Zimratu is saying the lie detectors are against worker’s rights.

Zimratu has said to ZIMRA Management:

We note with grave concern your continuous violation of the workers’ rights by initiating a polygraph process unilaterally. The union would also want to categorically deny ever discussing with Zimra this subject on the said date of 19 August 2016.

The issue discussed on the date in question was the abrupt transfer of workers by Zimra.

The union would want to remind you that your intended actions are a serious and direct violation of Zimra workers.

Zimratu is thus urging you to stop your planned tests and engage the union on this matter.

Corruption by ZIMRA officials is a big problem at border posts as well as in other ZIMRA operations in the country. This year the head of ZIMRA, Gershem Pasi, was suspended for corruption involving import of cars.
