Zinasu & Zicosu comment on Moyo's announcement that Govt will reintroduce student loans

Zimbabwe National Students’ Union (ZINASU) spokesman Zivai Mhetu and Zimbabwe Congress for Students Union (ZICOSU) interim president Takudzwa Gambiza spoke to The Herald over High Education Minister, Professor Jonathan Moyo‘s announcement that Government is set to reintroduce student loans.

Mhetu said the reintroduction of student loans will go a long way in assisting tertiary students considering the current economic situation but however questioned the grant part of the plan saying that there is rarely an option to pay back and I do not see them as a feasible idea in our economy. He also questioned the source of the money that will be used to implement the programme considering that the issue of student loans was not mentioned in the 2017 National Budget.

Gambiza also welcomed the idea of student loans but said that the involvement of financial institutions should be minimalised as they can create scenarios where their terms are rigid and they harden the process. He also raised  concerns over the source of the funds and said that as student representatives they will meet with Moyo’s Ministry to gain an appreciation of where exactly the money will come from.
