MDC-T activists convicted of killing police officer to be sentenced today

Three MDC-T members, Tungamirai Madzokere (41),  Yvonne Musarurwa (29) and Last Maengahama (40) who were convicted for killing Police Inspector Petros Mutedza in Glen View five years ago are expected to appear at the High Court today for sentencing. Their accomplice, Phineas Nhatarikwa, was convicted of a lesser charge of being an accessory to crime.

The State, led by prosecutor Mr Edmore Nyazamba, wants capital punishment imposed on the two men for the murder of Mutedza as provided by the law which now allows for the imposition of the death penalty only for murder in aggravating circumstances. However, defense lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa urged the court to consider the circumstances under which the three were convicted and blamed Mutedza’s death on the alleged brutal manner in which police dealt with opposition party supporters and members of the public.

Justice Chinembiri Bhunu sitting with assessors Mr Patrick Musengezi and Mr Alexander Mhandu, postponed the matter in September to consider the appropriate sentence.
