Journalist accused of being Baba Jukwa threatens to sue police

Former Sunday Mail editor Edmund Kudzai, who was accused of being behind the Facebook character Baba Jukwa, has threatened to sue the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP). Kudzai’s threat comes after an official from Google  revealed that ZRP detective Crispen Makedenge did not visit their offices in the US, adding that the company never received any requests for information either from the Harare authorities.

Makedenge had told the court that he had traveled to the United States in an effort to gather evidence tying Kudzai down to the Baba Jukwa account. Kudzai had earlier challenged Makedenge to produce evidence that he had indeed traveled to USA adding that there was no need for him to go there physically as the information could be requested online.

In May 2015 Chief Law officer Tawanda Zvekare indicated to the court that they were still pursuing territorial investigations and would proceed by way of summons if need be. Edmund and his brother were accused of running the Baba Jukwa page which leaked supposed secrets about President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu PF party ahead of the 2013 election.
