Matabeleland region remains a hotspot for HIV/AIDS-National AIDS Council of Zimbabwe

Official figures from the National AIDS Council of Zimbabwe show that Matabeleland region remains a hotspot for HI/AIDS with Matebeleland South having the highest AIDS prevalence rate with 22,8 percent followed by Matabeleland North at 20,1 percent, while Bulawayo’s rate is at 19 percent against the national prevalence rate of 14,6, down from 15 percent recorded last year.

National AIDS Council (NAC) Bulawayo Provincial AIDS Coordinator, Ms Sinatra Nyathi said long distance relationships and proximity to borders have also contributed to the increase in HIV and AIDS prevalence rate in Matabeleland North and South provinces as well as vuzu parties where teenagers engage in sex orgies after drinking alcohol increasing their chances of contracting the deadly virus.
