Mash Central chairperson to appear before disciplinary committee for challenging Mugabe's power to appoint VPs

Zanu-PF Mashonaland Central acting provincial chair Dickson Mafios will appear before a disciplinary committee following his comments concerning President Mugabe’s powers to appoint his deputies and Politburo members as part of measures to deal with factionalism within Zanu PF.

It is alleged that the province held a conference on November 19, 2016, between Zanu-PF Mashonaland Central district and provincial executive members. The meeting was meant to formulate positions around various matters ahead of the party’s 16th Annual National People’s Conference in Masvingo this December. After the meeting, Mafios announced that his executive had resolved that the party’s two Vice-Presidents must be elected, not appointed by the President. He said the provincial conference also wanted one of the VPs to be female.

It, however, later emerged that the resolutions had not come from conference, but were Mafios’ own personal thoughts.
