Government orders 4 500 tonnes of maize seed for command agriculture & fails to pay

The country’s largest maize seed producer, DUPONT Pioneer, has halted the supply of 4 500 tonnes of seed to government under the command agriculture scheme owing to Government’s bankruptcy.

DUPONT Pioneer country manager, Temba Nkatazo, said government is not paying for the seed they ordered. He said that they had only delivered 1 000 tonnes out of the 4 500 that Government ordered. Nkatazo said,

We are supplying seed for the national command agriculture programme and we were given quite some huge orders to supply, but there are some challenges in the payments and so forth, but we have moved a thousand something tonnes of maize seed and we are hoping to be moving another thousand or two in the next coming week. We are yet to deliver the remaining 3000 tonnes to farmers but the challenges we are having are that of the payments as I have highlighted earlier.
