Harare City Council disconnects thousands in Hopley over debt and illegal connections

Harare City Council (HCC) disconnected water supplies for thousands of Hopley residents over a $30 000 debt and numerous illegal connections. According to HCC residents have not been paying their water bills, and even worse there are numerous illegal connections which are prejudicing HCC of revenue.

Harare City Council department of water central area manager Engineer Richard Kunyadini said:

Since these connections are illegal, it is difficult to ascertain when they were made and how much council has been prejudiced. But we estimate that the residents owe us about US$30 000.Because of the illegal activities we saw it fit to stop any water supplies to the suburb until a system that allows accountability has been put in place.
However, residents expressed no knowledge of the debt.
