RBZ says Govt must not give farmers free inputs because it leads to low productivity

Speaking on Friday at the official closing of the Tobacco Marketing Season in Harare, Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) governor Dr John Mangudya, said that Government should stop giving free inputs to farmers because the practice leads to low production.

Mangudya said,

Free inputs are dangerous because they lead to low production. Zimbabweans have a culture of selling inputs and this should change because our production is very low. How do you people expect us to run an economy when you are not producing anything? We are trying to manage an economy under very difficult conditions, so everyone has a duty to serve the country and not to be served by the country.

However Government is currently giving out free inputs as part of its Command Agriculture initiative. Speaking at the same event, Agriculture Minister Joseph Made urged farmers to honour their contractual obligations and improve produce quality in order to meet the international pricing standards.
