5 Things you may not know about first lady, Grace Mugabe

 

1. She was born Grace Ntombizodwa Marufu on the 23rd of July 1965 in Benoni, Johannesburg, South Africa, the fourth child in a family of five. Her parents were immigrants. She lived in South Africa for the first 5 years of her life and only came to Zimbabwe when she was 5 years old in 1970.

2. In 1996 she enrolled at the University of London for the Bachelor of Arts (English) degree. However, she was deregistered in December 2004, after she failed to meet the deadline to complete her degree. On the 12th of September 2014, Grace graduated with a Ph.D. from the University of Zimbabwe’s Faculty of Social Studies Department of Sociology. She was capped by her long time husband who is also the Chancellor of all state Universities in Zimbabwe.

3. She was married to President Robert Mugabe in August 1996 at an elaborate wedding in President Mugabe’s rural home of Zvimba at Kutama College. The wedding festivities went on the whole weekend of August 17-18, and official estimates report that 40 000 people attended the wedding.

4. Grace Mugabe and her family control Gushungo Holdings. Alpha Omega Dairy is one of the subsidiaries of Gushungo Holdings.

5. Grace Mugabe also runs an orphanage in Mazowe where she takes care of dozens of orphans who she adopted from different parts of the country. She has also constructed a primary school which also includes a preparatory school at the centre.
