Govt will not recruit workers for Harare-Beitbridge highway, everything will be done by contractors: Minister Gumbo

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure development Joram Gumbo has revealed that the government will not be involved in the recruitment of labour for the $2.8 billion Harare-Beitbridge highway. He said that everything was now left to the discretion of the contractors, Australian firm, Geiger International and China Harbour Engineering Company (Chec). The announcement will not be welcomed by Zanu-PF youths who have been demanding exclusive employment rights on the road construction as a reward for being loyal to the party.

Said Gumbo,

The ministry will not play any role in the hiring of workers. Our job is over. We have done our part and it now lies in the hands of Geiger International, they will handle everything.

The party will not be involved in any way. We will not interfere with the contractor’s works.

So, the truth is that we will never interfere with their works, either as government or as Zanu PF

Gumbo insisted that the project would create at least 300 000 jobs, something which many critics have questioned. Said Gumbo,

I don’t know where people get it wrong. I still maintain that as much as 300 000 jobs will be created by this job, either as construction labourers or in downstream support works.
