Mine worker's body retrieved 4 days after mine collapse

Brian Mathe’s (23) body was retrieved yesterday after he was buried alive last Friday when a mine shaft caved on him and his colleague Thembani Ncube (17) at Crocodile Farm in Esigodini, Matabeleland South. Ncube’s body was retrieved on Saturday but Mathe’s body remained trapped as those searching for his body failed to locate it resulting in the mine’s owner, Mr Lovemore Sibanda hiring two excavators.

The first excavator caught fire on Monday before reaching the scene and the second one was used to retrieve the body yesterday. Speaking to The Chronicle, the mine’s manager, Mr Nichodemus Khumalo, confirmed that the decomposing body was retrieved yesterday at 4AM.
