Integrity of 2018 voters roll could be compromised by delays in biometric voter registration

Various organisations running the iVote2018 campaign have expressed concern that the 2018 elections could be affected by a  compromised voters roll.  The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission is compiling a new voters roll, but the new roll has been affected by delays in commencing biometric voter registration.

In the statement the iVote2018 organisations said:

Regional, continental and international best practices have shown that successful introduction of electoral technology requires at least 24 months before the date of elections.

Hence it is worrying that the commission is unclear about the start and end dates for the voter registration process, with barely 18 months remaining before the next elections.

The remaining timeframe indicates that Zimbabwe has entered the red zone if the notion to use electoral technology in compiling a fresh voters’ roll is pursued.
