Police officer injured after being manhandled for demanding spot fine

A traffic officer in Mutare was pushed on to the tarmac by a passenger and a driver after delaying them while demanding a spot fine at a road block.

Edward Masiya appeared before Magistrate Langton Mukwengi facing charges of contravening section 53 of the Road Traffic Act (Chapter 13:11). Masiya was also charged with reckless driving after he reportedly crossed a red robot while escaping from the police. He however denied the charges and was remanded into custody to a later date to allow the police to bring a detailed report on what transpired. Magistrate Mukwengi denied Masiya bail saying he was a flight risk, adding that the court wanted to verify his given address.

Masiya however argued that he did not escape from police but was beaten with baton sticks when he stopped at the roadblock after they argued. The court was told that Masiya was stopped by police at a road block and was told that his car had some defects and he should pay a spot fine. Masiya reportedly told the police officer that he had no money but the cop insisted that he should pay before proceeding with his journey.

During the argument, one of the passengers in Masiya’s car reportedly used force to push the officer who fell on the tarmac and sustained some injuries.
