Zambia government begins sending food to Zimbabwe. 4.1 million needing aid

A report in Lusaka Times says the Zambian government has started sending food aid to Zimbabwe and other countries in the SADC region. A total of 48,000 metric tonnes of food to help deal with starvation in the region will began flowing from Zambia today.

Zambia’s Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit National Co-ordinator Patrick Kangwa said on the development:

Government of Zambia shall continue to assist in any way possible to mitigate the sufferings of our brothers and sisters in the region affected by dry spells and drought.

In Zimbabwe, 4.1 million people are facing starvation after the 2015/2016 drought. Zimbabwe’s food insecurity has been worsened by the fact that commercial farming of food was disrupted by the land resettlement programme which took farming land back from white farmers. Some of the white farmers resettled in Zambia and are believed to be contributing significantly to the food production there. However some analysts have said that most of the food being sent to Zimbabwe is actually farmed by African smallholder producers across the country. Zambia received good rainfall and harvested higher than predicted at 2.8m tonnes.

The Herald in Zimbabwe reported today that the United Nations and other organisation have raised US $200 million towards food aid and is still seeking at least $150 million more for all food insecure households countrywide.
